I saw a team run this play recently that absolutely made it stick—ball played short, two guys sprint toward the ball like they’re gonna take it, then peel off at the last second. The defender’s stuck trying to figure out who to follow while the actual striker slides into the space they left. That’s brilliant. That’s set piece design that actually works. It ain’t about having the tallest guys on the pitch—it’s about using what you got to make ‘em wrong.
And don’t get me started on the goalkeeper factor—most keepers get caught ball-watching when you slide a low ball into the six-yard box. They’re trained to expect high crosses, so when you put it on the ground with pace? They freeze for half a second and that’s all you need. So forget the textbook stuff.
